Sumowrestling Wiki

Shiraneyama Munenori - 白根山 宗則 (born March 11, 1950) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Minami-Alps, Yamanashi. He made his debut in September 1966 and last wrestled for Isenoumi stable. He reached the juryo division in March 1972. His highest rank was juryo 13 and he retired in May 1977.

Early Life[]

After graduating from junior high school, he worked at a local post office for around one and a half year. However, he aspired to become a sumo wrestler and joined Isenoumi stable despite his parent's heavy opposition.

Career[]

He made his debut in September 1966 and was given the shikona "Shiraneyama" (白根山). He steadily climbed up the ranks and in his sandanme debut, he won all seven matches, but missed out on the yusho after losing the playoff. Nevertheless, he was promoted to makushita in the following May 1968 tournament, but he went winless in the tournament. In 1970, he briefly reverted back to his surname of Fukazawa but switched to Shiraneyama in the beginning of 1971. In January 1972 he produced a 5-2 record at the rank of makushita 4 and was promoted to juryo in the following March 1972 tournament.

In his first tournament as a sekitori, he produced a 4-11 record and was demoted back down to makushita. This proved to be his only tournament ranked in juryo. He was unable to return to juryo, but did have many strong attempts to return to sekitori, and he announced his retirement after the May 1977 tournament.

Fighting Style[]

Shiraneyama was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a migi-yotsu (left hand outside, right hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His most common kimarite was yorikiri, or force out. He also liked to employ tsuridashi, or lift out.
