Surugatsukasa Akihiro - 駿河司 章洋 (born August 11, 1980) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Fukuroi, Shizuoka. He made his debut in November 1998 and wrestled for Irumagawa stable. His highest rank was makushita 1 and he retired in September 2010.
Early Life[]
Nagura was born on August 11, 1980, in Fukuroi, Shizuoka. He attended Hiryu High School which was known for its strong sumo program. After graduating high school, he joined Irumagawa stable.
Career[]
He made his professional debut in November 1998 and was given the shikona "Surugatsukasa" (駿河司). He reached the sandanme division in July 1999, but did not reach makushita until March 2003 due to injuries. In March 2006, he was aiming for the makushita yusho and he won his first six matches, however, he lost his final match to Kotoyutaka. In July 2008, he finished with a perfect 7-0 record, but missed out on the sandanme yusho after losing to Homarefuji in the playoff.
In September 2009, while ranked at makushita 4, Surugatsukasa was on the verge of a juryo promotion as his record was 5-1 after the eleventh day. However, he lost his exchange bout to juryo-ranked Hoshikaze. Nevertheless, he was promoted to the rank of makushita 2 for November 2009 tournament. In this tournament, Surugatsukasa finished with a 4-3 record, including a win over juryo-ranked Gagamaru, however, he was promoted to makushita 1 in January 2010 instead of juryo due to a lack of open slots in juryo. In this tournament, he finished with a 2-5 record and failed to capitalize on a juryo promotion. He retired from sumo shortly after in September 2010.
Personal Life[]
- Surugatsukasa's older brother, Hideyasu Nagura (born 1977), was also a sumo wrestler. He joined Irumagawa stable in November 1994 and wrestled under the name Fujitsukasa.
