Tachiwaka Minegoro - 太刀若 峰五郎 (born October 1, 1903 - August 13, 1988) was a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Ise, Mie. He made his debut in January 1918 and wrestled for Takasago stable. He reached the makuuchi division in January 1934. His highest rank was maegashira 6 and he retired in May 1938.

Early Career[]

Umaba was recruited into sumo by yokozuna Tachiyama during a tour in Ise, Mie. He made his professional debut in January 2018 and was given the shikona "Tachiwaka" (太刀若). He was promoted to makushita in January 1928 and reached the juryo division in January 1931. He left sumo in 1932 due to a strike called the "Shunjuen Incident", which was largely unsuccessful, so he returned to sumo in January 1933 and was promoted to makuuchi in January 1934.

Makuuchi Career[]

Tachiwaka was ranked in the top division for a total of 8 tournaments, reaching as high as maegashira 6 in January 1937. He retired from sumo in May 1938.

Retirement from Sumo[]

After retiring, he remained in sumo as an elder of the Japan Sumo Association, working as a coach at Takasago stable under the name Tokiwayama Oyakata. He reached the mandatory retirement age of 65 in 1968. He died on August 13, 1988, at the age of 84.

Fighting Style[]

Tachiwaka was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a hidari-yotsu (right hand outside, left hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His most common kimarite was yorikiri, or force out.
