Yokozuna Kimenzan was Takekuma stable's most successful sumo wrestler
Takekuma stable (武隈部屋, Takekuma-beya) was a stable of sumo wrestlers which was established in the Edo period. The stable closed and reopened on many separate occasions.
History[]
Takekuma stable was established in the mid-late Edo period by former wrestler Suminoi Jinsuke who branched out from Isenoumi stable. After this, former juryo wrestler Tokiwa Sagakichi took over the stable and produced the sixth yokozuna Onomatsu. However, Takekuma Oyakata (former juryo Tokiwa) died and the wrestler subsequently transferred to Ikazuchi stable. Among the wrestlers transferring were future ozeki Tegarayama and Koyanagi.
In 1843, ozeki Tegarayama revived the stable and produced the 13th yokozuna Kimenzan. Takekuma Oyakata (former ozeki Tegarayama) passed away in 1858 and Kimenzan took over the stable, however, he passed away in 1871.
In 1885, Sekiwake Tegarayama branched out of Sakaigawa stable and revived Takekuma stable for the third time. Hoe oversaw the promotions of maegashira Yoshinoyama and Kurokomo (who escaped from Osaka Sumo). However, he died in 1889 and former juryo Ryumon Koinosuke took control of the stable. He produced maegashira Shiranui Kotsuemon (who later transferred to Tatekawa stable), but the stable closed once again in 1922.
In January 1929, former sekiwake Ryogoku Kajinosuke IV revived the stable, however, it closed four years later in January 1933. He reopened the stable in January 1936 and was able to produce two juryo wrestlers, but was unable to coach any wrestlers to the top division. The stable closed down in April 1954.
The most recent reincarnation of the stable was established in 1999 by former Sekiwake Kurohimeyama. It closed down in 2004 with limited success. (see Takekuma stable (1999) for more information).
