Tanaka Yuta - 田中 優汰 (born June 29, 1999) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Wakayama City, Wakayama. He made his debut in March 2022 and wrestled for Sakaigawa stable. His highest rank was jonidan 80 and he retired in July 2022.
Early Life[]
Yuta Tanaka was born on June 29, 1999, in Wakayama City, Wakayama. He attended Arita Shiritsu Minoshima Junior High School where he was a member of the school's sumo club. During his third year, he placed third at the lightweight division at the All Japan Prefectural Junior High School Championships. He went on to attend Ichikawa High School in Hyogo where he ranked fifth at the Kokutai Tournament during his third year of high school.[1]
After high school, he attended Kwansei Gakuen University, where in his first year he won the under 85 kg weight class at the West Japan Sumo Championships. In his second year, he placed second at the All Japan Sumo Championship lightweight class and won the National Japan Sumo Championship under 85 kg weight class. During his third and fourth year in university, he was unable to participate in team competitions due to a shortage of members in the school's sumo club. After graduating university, Tanaka joined Sakaigawa stable.[1]
Career[]
Tanaka is the second professional sumo wrestler from Kwansei Gakuin University after Ura. He made his professional debut in March 2022 and finished with a 4-3 record in his first official tournament. However, he retired in July 2022 after only three tournaments in sumo.[2]

Tanaka is a skilled technician and employed a variety of different moves during his only tournament in sumo. He won by yorikiri (force out), utchari (backward pivot throw), uchigake (inside leg trip), and the extremely rare sotokomata (over thigh scooping body drop).[3]
