Tanji Jun - 丹治 純 (born June 5, 2006) is a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Fukushima City, Fukushima. He made his debut in March 2022 and currently wrestles for Arashio stable. His highest rank as of 2025 is makushita 18.

Early Life[]

Jun Tanji was born on June 5, 2006, in Fukushima to a Japanese father and a Russian mother. He initially participated in rhythmic gymnastics through the influence of his mother, who was also a rhythmic gymnast, but switched to sumo wrestling during his third year at Fukushima Shiritsu Suginome Elementary School.[1] He then attended Fukushima Shiritsu Fukushima Daiichi Junior High School where he won the Fukushima and Tohoku tournaments and reached the best 16 at the national level.[2] After junior high school, he joined Arashio stable which was already home to his older brother Taiga.[3]

Career[]

He made his professional debut in March 2022 and wrestled under his surname Tanji. In May 2022, he finished with a strong 6-1 record, but missed out on the jonokuchi yusho after losing to Kazekeno in the playoff. He followed with another 6-1 record in July and was promoted to sandanme for the September 2022 tournament. He was promoted to makushita in July 2023, a little after his 17th birthday.[1] In January 2024, having fallen back to sandanme, Tanji was aiming for the sandanme yusho but was disqualified due to a hair pull to Haruyama on the 11th day. Nevertheless, he still managed a 6-1 record and was promoted back to makushita in March 2024.[4]

Personal Life[]

  • Tanji's older brother, Taiga, joined Arashio stable as well in March 2018.[3]
  • Tanji's mother, Natalia, is Russian.[1]
  • In May 2024, a video posted by Bleacher Report showing Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons training with Tanji went viral. Many NFL fans were surprised to learn that Tanji was only 17 years old at the time and jokingly suggested that an NFL team should sign him.[5][6]

Tanji is a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He won most of his bouts with a straightforward yorikiri, or force out.[7]
