Tennozan Kai - 天王山 開 (born August 21, 1993) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Katano, Osaka. He made his debut in January 2012 and wrestled for Onomatsu stable. His highest rank was makushita 16 and he retired in November 2022.

Early Life[]

Kai Shinohara was born on August 21, 1993, in Katano, Osaka. Shinohara began sumo wrestling during his third year of elementary school and he won second place at a local wanpaku sumo tournament held in Katano, Osaka. He practiced at a local dojo until his graduation from junior high school. He went on to attend Soukai Senior High School where he was a member of the sumo club. He also served as student council president as well as captain of the sumo club. After graduating high school, he was recruited into Onomatsu Stable by Onomatsu Oyakata.[1][2]

Career[]

He made his professional debut in January 2012 and initially wrestled under his surname Shinohara. He was promoted to sandanme in July 2012 and makushita in January 2014. He won the sandanme yusho with a perfect 7-0 record in the November 2014 tournament. In September 2018, he was given the shikona "Tennozan" (天王山). Prior to the July 2019 tournament, he tore his right shoulder's rotator cuff and had to sit out of the following two tournaments which resulted in a drop back down to jonidan. He returned to makushita in September 2020 and reached a career-best makushita 16 in November 2021.[3]

Retirement from Sumo[]

Tennozan retired from sumo in November 2022. His retirement ceremony, or danpatsu-shiki, was held on December 10, 2022, and he returned to his hometown to become a police officer.[4]

Personal Life[]

  • From 2013 to 2015, Tennozan was in charge of performing comic sumo displays (初っ切り, shokkiri) with stablemate Wakayama.[5]
  • Tennozan's hobby is listening to music.[6]

Tennozan was proficient in both yotsu-sumo (grappling) and oshi-sumo (pushing and thrusting) techniques. His most often used winning kimarite was yorikiri (force out), followed by oshidashi (push out).[7]
