Early Life[]

Kota Mitsuuchi was born on May 11, 19976, in Kochi. He began sumo wrestling during his first year at Nagahama Elementary School due to his big size. In his fifth year of elementary school, he finished top 8 at the All Japan Elementary School Sumo Tournament. In his third year at Kochi Shiritsu Nankai Junior High School, he competed at the All-Japan Junior High School Sumo Tournament.[1]

After graduating from junior high school, he attended Saitama Sakae High School where he was classmates with Takakeisho. During his second year, he won the group competition at the National High School Sumo Championship and he served as the captain of his school's sumo club during his third year.[2] After high school, he joined Onomatsu stable at the recommendation of the director of Saitama Sakae High School's sumo club.[1]

Career[]

Prior to joining professional sumo, Mitsuuchi had a history of dislocating his left shoulder and already had multiple surgeries performed on it.[3] He made his professional debut in July 2015 and posted three consecutive 6-1 records. Prior to the July 2016 tournament, he re-injured his left shoulder and had to miss the following four tournaments.[4] He returned to sumo in March 2017 and had to redo maezumo (pre-sumo). However, he had to withdraw again three tournaments later in September 2017 due to dislocating his right shoulder. He underwent surgery in October and missed five tournaments which caused him to fall off the banzuke.[3] He returned to sumo in July 2018 and won the jonokuchi and jonidan yusho with perfect 7-0 records in September and November 2018. In March 2019, he ruptured his right knee's anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament.[5] He underwent surgery and was wheelchair-bounded for a month and a half.[6] He returned in November 2019 under the new shikona "Tosamidori" (土佐緑) and took his second jonokuchi yusho. He was promoted to makushita in November 2020 and reached a career-best makushita 11 in July 2021.[7]
