Tsunenoyama Hideo - 常の山 日出男 (born August 7, 1946) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Kurashiki, Okayama. He made his debut in September 1964 and last wrestled for Dewanoumi stable. He reached the juryo division in May 1978. His highest rank was juryo 12 and he retired in September 1979.
Early Life[]
Suzuki was born the eldest son to parents engaged in the cleaning industry. He attended Kurashiki Shiritsu Ajino Junior High School where he participated in judo and shot put. After graduating junior high school, he joined Dewanoumi stable in March 1962.
Career[]
Due to his small size, Suzuki failed the physical test until September 1964 where he met the height requirement. He was given the shikona "Dewaarashi" (出羽嵐). He won the jonokuchi yusho with a perfect 7-0 record in his first professional tournament. He was promoted to sandanme in March 1965 and makushita in November 1966. After twelve years in makushita, he finally achieved promotion to juryo in May 1978 where he was already 31 years old. His younger brother Washuyama, who was already a well established sekitori, had fallen back down to juryo due to injury and they were simultaneously ranked in juryo.
Upon promotion to juryo he changed his shikona to "Tsunenoyama" (常の山) which was the shikona his uncle former maegashira Tsunenoyama Katsumasa. He could only manage a 5-10 record and was demoted back down to makushita. He returned to juryo in September 1978, but could only finish with a 2-13 record.
Retirement from Sumo[]
He announced his retirement after the September 1979 tournament. After retiring from sumo, he opened up a chanko restaurant in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture, called "Chanko Tsunenoyama" (ちゃんこ常の山).
Personal Life[]
His younger brother Suzuki was also a wrestler. He joined Dewanoumi stable in March 1967 and was given the shikona Washuyama. His highest rank was sekiwake and he became the head of Dewanoumi stable after retirement. His uncle is Tsunenoyama Katsumasa I and his cousin is Tsunenoyama Katsumasa II.
Fighting Style[]
Tsunenoyama was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a hidari-yotsu (right hand outside, left hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His favorite kimarite was komatasukui (over thigh scooping body drop), but his most common kimarite was yorikiri, or force out.
