Wakaarashi Takeshi - 若嵐 武 (born June 9, 1924 - date of death unknown) was a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Saku, Nagano. He made his debut in January 1941 and last wrestled for Nishiiwa stable. He reached the makuuchi division in January 1951. His highest rank was maegashira 18 and he retired in January 1955.
Career[]
Early Career[]
Born in the town of Iwamurada (later merged into Saku City) in Nagano prefecture, he joined Wakamatsu stable (later Nishiiwa stable) and made his professional debut in January 1941. Wrestling under the shikona "Wakaarashi" (若嵐), he was promoted to sandanme in May 1943 and makushita in November 1946. In May 1949 he won the makushita yusho at the rank of makushita 6 and was promoted to juryo in October 1949.
Juryo Career[]
In his fist tournament as a sekitori, Wakaarashi finished with a 9-6 record. After four tournaments in juryo, he was promoted to makuuchi in January 1951.
Makuuchi Career[]
Wakaarashi struggled in his top division debut and finished with a disastrous 2-13 record. He was demoted back down to juryo and he never managed to return back to makuuchi. After a series of poor records, he changed his shikona to "Chikumanishiki" (千曲錦) in January 1953, but it did not boost his morale and he retired from sumo in January 1955.
Retirement from Sumo[]
Upon retirement from active competition, he became an elder in the Japan Sumo Association, under the name Minato. He later borrowed the Nishiiwa name and left the sumo world in July 1967 as he did not own any permanent stock. After leaving, he worked for a security company in Osaka Prefecture. He later died due to illness, but the age and date of death are unknown.
Fighting Style[]
Wakaarashi was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a migi-yotsu (left hand outside, right hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His favorite kimarite was tsuridashi (lift out) and uwatenage (overarm throw).
