Wakazakura Hayate - 和歌桜 颯 (born April 4, 1995) is a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Kyoto City, Kyoto. He made his debut in March 2018 and currently wrestles for Kasugano stable. His highest rank as of 2025 is makushita 23.

Early Life[]

Hayate Kawamoto was born on April 4, 1995, in Kyoto City's Ukyo Ward. After graduating from Minoshima High School, he enrolled at Takushoku University's Department of Economics[1] and was also a member of the school's sumo club.[2] Kawamoto reached the top 16 at the 2017 National Student Championships.[3] After graduating university, Kawamoto was recruited into Kasugano stable by Takenawa Oyakata (former sekiwake Tochinonada) who was also an alumnus of Takushoku University.[1]

Career[]

Kawamoto made his professional debut in March 2018 and finished with a strong 6-1 record in his first official tournament. In July 2018, he was aiming for the jonidan yusho and won his first six matches, however, he lost his final match to Rao to finish with a 6-1 record. Nevertheless, he was promoted to sandanme for the following September 2018 tournament. Kawamoto struggled considerably more in sandanme compared to the previous two divisions and did not reach makushita until March 2020. In March 2022, he was given the shikona "Wakazakura" (和歌桜).[4]

Wakazakura is an oshi-sumo wrestler who prefers pushing and thrusting techniques to fighting on the mawashi. His most common kimarite used are oshidashi (push out), hatakikomi (slap down) and tsukiotoshi (thrust down).[5]
