Wakazakura Yasuyuki - 和歌桜 康幸 (born April 20, 1977) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Wakayama City, Wakayama. He made his debut in March 1993 and wrestled for Nakamura stable. His highest rank was jonidan 163 and he retired in September 1993.
Early Life[]
Hirose was born in Wakayama city on April 20, 1977. He has always been a big child, and he did not dislike any food that was served to him. Since both his parents worked, he often ate by himself and was unable to control his eating habits. Therefore, by the time he was 5, he already weighed 50 kg (110 lb) and 150 kg (331 lb) during his time at Wakayama Municipality Nishiwaki Junior High School. After graduating junior high school, he joined Nakamura stable.
Career[]
He made his debut in March 1993 and he was given the shikona "Hirosefuji" (廣瀬富士). In his first tournament, he missed out on his first two matches, but returned on the 5th day and won his remaining five matches, including a win over future maegashira Kotokusaga. He was given the new shikona "Wakazakura" (和歌桜) for the following July 1993 tournament, however, he finished with a 3-4 record in this tournament.
Retirement from Sumo[]
After less than a year in sumo, he retired from sumo in September 1993 due to sickness caused by severe training. After retiring, he worked as a fisherman and a truck driver. He later enrolled at Shochiku Geino, a talent agency, and worked as a comedian under the stage name HIRO.
Fighting Style[]
Wakazakura was an oshi-sumo wrestler who prefers pushing and thrusting techniques to fighting on the mawashi. His most common kimarite used was a straightforward oshidashi, or push out.
