Early Life[]

Kota Yata was born on February 7, 2000, in Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture. In his sixth year at elementary school, Yata stood at 1.70 m (5 ft 7 in) and weighed 80 kg (176 lb). He began sumo wrestling in junior high school and grew 20 cm in those three years. He was later recruited by Onoe Oyakata (former komusubi Hamanoshima) and was prompted to drop out of his high school in Kinokawa, Wakayama, to pursue a career in professional sumo. He agreed and joined Onoe stable.[1][2]

Career[]

Yata made his professional debut in March 2017. Already standing at 1.95 m (6 ft 5 in) and weighing 203 kg (448 lb), he was one of the biggest new recruits of all time and received significant media coverage as a result. To the surprise of many he performed poorly in maezumo (pre-sumo) and lost all of four of his bouts. One of his more embarrassing losses in maezumo was against Usui who weighed only 68 kg (150 lb). He missed the following May 2017 tournament and retired from sumo in July 2017 without participating in any official bouts.[3]
